A good Vaporizer grinder is more than an accessory: evenly ground material lets hot air flow uniformly through the chamber, vaporizes more completely, and tastes cleaner. Unevenly ground herbs, on the other hand, may vaporize too quickly in some places and not at all in others. So before you buy a grinder, it’s worth considering three things: the material, the design with or without a pollen screen, and the size that suits your daily routine.

Stainless steel, aluminum, or ceramic?

The material determines the grinder's weight, durability, and care requirements. Stainless steel grinders are heavy and practically indestructible: Herb Ripper grinders are made with teeth and housing of the same uncoated steel, so there's no coating to wear off. The Hizen 2-Piece Stainless Steel Grinder is the compact alternative. Aluminum grinders are lightweight and available in many sizes. The Hizen HIZN Ceramic Grinder has an aluminum body fully coated with nano-ceramic: The non-stick surface means less material sticks, and the grinder is easier to clean.

2-, 3-, or 4-piece – with or without a pollen screen

A 2-piece grinder consists only of a lid and a grinding chamber: Grind your herbs and remove them directly from the teeth, making it ideal for small portions on the go, like the Norddampf 2-Piece Grinder. A 3-piece grinder also has a collection chamber that catches the ground material, like the Arizer Herb Mill. A 4-piece grinder uses a pollen screen to separate the fine material into its own compartment. A 3-piece grinder is usually enough for your Vaporizer, since you'll put all the ground material into the chamber anyway.

For most herb vaporizers, a medium-fine grind is ideal: If it's too coarse, the material heats unevenly; if it's too fine, it clogs screens and restricts airflow, especially with convection. Small grinders around 50 mm fit in any pocket, while a 63 mm grinder lets you grind a day's supply at once. XXL models measuring 100 mm are made for home use. Specialty grinders are handy, too, like the Hizen Capsule Grinder, which grinds directly into a dosing capsule, or the Storz & Bickel Herb Grinder, with extra-sharp teeth and a diameter of around 59 mm.
